My approach to counseling

Qualifications

Systemic Counselor and Supervisor (DGSF; German Association for Systemic Therapy, Counseling and Family Therapy & SG ; Systemic Society)

Through various activities in counseling, research, education, and other group-based organizations, I have found that the systemic /structural approach fits best with my way of thinking. Identifying the over-arching influences that cause and perpetuate crises and other impasses is a process that fascinates me. Understanding these factors and facilitating change through systemic counseling can help mitigate or even resolve crises. My experience in various system contexts qualifies me to assist clients in taking a step back from their problems and finding new perspectives in seemingly unchangeable situations.

Mobile Special Education Services at Vocational Schools (Berufschulen)

As part of my work in the school system, I support and counsel young people with learning disabilities who are attending school while learning an occupation. The “occupational training system” is a network consisting of the student, his/her parents and teachers, the school leadership, the student’s place of work, the chamber of commerce, employment office, tutors and various government agencies. As a member of the Mobile Special Education staff, it is my job to counsel any members of the system who require my services, in order to enable the student with special education needs to complete her/his occupational training. Supervision for teachers in the form of case-centered counseling is especially effective in supporting the student’s system.

Special Education Teacher

In my capacity as a special education teacher, I’ve been educating 15- to 20-year-old students attending occupational orientation programs for many years. My focus lies on increasing student motivation and enabling the attainment of learning goals in spite of limitations due to illness, family stress or disability. Teaching is a source of great joy, and my pedagogical viewpoint sets the highest priority on the development of a relationship between teacher and student as the foundation of all learning.

Doctoral degree in Special Education, Education and Philosophy

After completing my theoretical and practical special education degree, I attained my doctoral degree in the Department for Special Education (Physical Disabilities) at the University of Würzburg. My research focus lay on the quality of teaching-learning processes and theories of motivation. Following these four years of research and teaching in Würzburg, I went on to work as a visiting teacher at the Department of Education in Nuremberg. From my point of view, theoretical reflection and practice are mutually enriching endeavors. I see one of my strengths in thinking on the “meta level”, and using this way of thinking to understand how individual actions are imbedded in system contexts, enabling change by broadening perspectives.
